Discretionary Grants listing now available

Individuals, organizations, localities, and state agencies in Virginia are now eligible — and encouraged — to apply for a number of competitive grants that have become available through the ARRA. The list was updated on August 17, 2009 and is listed by federal agency and contains a short description of the grant.

It is highly recommended that individuals or groups interested in applying for a competitive grant register as soon as possible to avoid delays or issues as the federal website may become overloaded due to high traffic. You may also want to submit print copies of your grant application in addition to your electronic application, as the electronic process may be overwhelmed due to the high volume of applications anticipated.

Virginia Loan Program a Success

RICHMOND—Governor Timothy M. Kaine today noted the extraordinary success Virginia State Employee Loan Program, a unique partnership to help meet the short term loan needs of state employees. In just one month, the pilot program has issued loans to 1,310 state employees for a total value of $641,657.

“I believe the early success of this pilot program clearly demonstrates that there is a need for these types of loans. More importantly, it allows state employees the opportunity to receive small loans without having to go to predatory lenders,” Governor Kaine said. “The success of this program demonstrates that other large employers can implement similar initiatives as a service to their own employees.”

The program, a partnership between the Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign (CVC) and Virginia Credit Union (VACU), offers small loans of $100 to $500 to state employees facing financial difficulties.

Penny Johnson: Millions of Us Should Make Financial Literacy a Priority

Penny Johnson, Wachovia VP and Senior Community Development officer recently was a guest columnist for the Richmond Times Dispatch.  She writes:

"Like many Americans, I did not receive any formal education on how to manage money. From cradle to college to corporate America, I did what most Americans do -- I spent far more than I saved.

A 2007 survey of 2,000-plus Americans by the Consumer Federation of America found that half of Americans (52 percent) say they are not saving adequately. Of those surveyed, 17 percent say they can't afford to save at all, while 35 percent say they are saving but not enough to meet shortand long-term financial needs."
